Daddy’s Test Kitchen: Avocado 2 Ways

Up until a few months ago, I had never eaten an avocado in my life. I’ve been told that’s a sin in Southern California. So after seven years of living out here I finally broke down and tried one. It was among the tastiest fruits I’ve ever had. Avocado is light, versatile, and you don’t have to cook it. All of those reasons made it the perfect food to snack on during our massive heatwave this week.

When I told our Pediatrician about us trying different foods out on Boy Wonder she told us that avocado isn’t just tasty good, it’s good for him too. That was all the encouragement I needed to work my new favorite food into our weekly diet.

Before I was introduced to them, I thought that Avocados were a vegetable. It turns out they are actually a fruit! They contain more nutrients than a lot of other fruits do. For example, Avocados have the highest protein content among it’s produce brethren. That doesn’t sound like a super food to me. That sounds like an Incredible Food.

Avocado Made Two Ways; For Your Sidekick and You To Enjoy Together

For The Sidekick

Wash the outside of the avocado, then remove the peel and mash the guts up. Since they’re high in fat, avocados easily make your little super hero’s tummy feel full. You can serve it just like that or as a small side dish with another puree.

As your kiddo gets older, you can skip the mashing step (don’t look at me like that. I know it’s the most fun part). Instead, you’ll get to channel your inner Iron Chef by practicing some knife skills. Slice and dice the inside meat of the avocado into bite size chunks then let your little feed themselves. That’s where we are with Boy Wonder now and he loves it.

For the IncrediDad

Follow all the steps listed above, except spread it over toast when you’re done.

We don’t buy a whole lot of bread in our house. Before I had a kid, I would bake my own bread from time to time, but who has time for that anymore? Recently, I’ve fallen in love with Dave’s Killer Bread, packed with protein, fiber, and whole grains. It’s way too expensive but the taste more than makes up for it.

Nothing fancy to do here, slide a slice of bread into the toaster, when it pops out slather that sucker with your avocado mash. Enjoy!

Hot Summer Day Bonus

I know I said avocados two ways but, with this heatwave, I couldn’t resist throwing in this refreshing avocado smoothie. My favorite part about it is that there are only three ingredients,

1 avocado
2 chopped bananas
400 ML of Milk

Combine all the incredients in your blender.  We have the Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker in our kitchen. Pour it in your favorite cup and serve immediately.

Since Boy Wonder doesn’t have dairy in his diet, I was thinking of substituting some of IncrediMom’s breast milk and serving it in a cereal bottle. I’ll post an update later on to let you know if it worked out.

Have you fallen in love with avocado too? What’s summertime snack do you like to share with your little sidekick? Share your thoughts in the comments below. We would love to hear from you!
